Inaction, Selfishness, Unconsciousness: the fight against Global Warming !
Nowadays, global warming is one of the major issues of our world, however who is
struggling to save our planet, governments, common people, teenagers, us?
“How dare you? “were the words of Greta Thunberg at the UN Climate action summit
followed by the sentence’’, You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty
words. People are saying that the new generation is going more and more passive while
one of the greatest ecologists is a little girl that has begun this struggle at the age of 14 years
old. Nowadays, global warming is the major issue of our age and the world’s government do
not seem to be so preoccupied by the fact that some regions will no longer be habitable in
2050.
In fact, while the human race is in danger because of the excessive use of non-renewable
energy, the states are tirelessly using it again and again. To picture my words, the World Cup
organized by the State of Qatar announces a catastrophic carbon footprint for the planet.
Moreover, the air conditioner omnipresent created emissions that have a negative effect on
the planet. Pollution is responsible for 9 million deaths every year worldwide. Deforestation,
massive construction of habitat and greenhouse emissions does not stop and contributes to
global warming, some countries such as the Netherlands may even disappear. Nevertheless,
some economies depend on these resources and particularly their income from coal or oil
such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, countries which have become rich thanks to these funds.
Indeed, ecology has always been seen as a barrier to the development of the human and
particularly to the economy. Therefore, in 2015, the UN decided to present 17 goals to reach
in 2030 that represent a concept, sustainable development. The Brundtland Report in 1987
defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present
generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’’.
Sustainable development is basically a development that will not negatively impact the future
generations. Just as the words of Greta Thunberg, the new generations will have to deal with
issues that we will let to them, using selfishly all the resources of the planet that have been
preserved by our ancestors would be inhuman and ungrateful, thinking about the others is the
real message behind this project that may be a little bit utopian. However, even after these
assertions from all the countries, the situation is still critical. Even though the government’ s
attempts such as starting an energetic transition, collaboration to struggle against this danger
and ecological projects; the danger is still here. These projects remain superficial in the face
of the immense progress that remains to be made. Poverty, inequality of development,
political problems, lack of initiative by States, wars and political conflicts as well as the
materialism which currently reigns do not allow us to overcome and unite in order to preserve
our planet.
However, there are a lot of people just like Greta Thunberg that are fighting every day for
our planet and more than anything the future generation. Greta Thunberg sacrifices her
childhood and her life for this reason. She is inspiring and a real model for many people,
despite her young age she is more mature and responsible than the head of government
themselves. She is demonstrating that this issue is not a political issue but indeed a problem
that affects everyone, therefore we all have the responsibility to preserve the ecosystem and
the environment.
